How to Avoid Customs Delays When Importing from China

Your freight forwarder selection is one of the most important decisions in your supply chain. A good forwarder offers: competitive rates (not the cheapest), transparent pricing, proactive communication, customs expertise, and problem-solving capability. Interview at least 3 forwarders. Check their references. Start with a trial shipment before committing to a long-term relationship. A bad forwarder can cost you more in delays and damage than you save on freight.

Pre-shipment planning prevents half of all logistics problems. Confirm: correct HS code classification, complete shipping documents, proper packaging for the transport mode, correct labels and marks, insurance coverage, and destination country import requirements. A pre-shipment logistics checklist shared with your supplier and forwarder ensures nothing is forgotten. Good logistics is 80% preparation and 20% execution.

Customs valuation is a common source of disputes. Chinese customs values goods for export based on the transaction value (the price actually paid). The importing country's customs may independently assess value. Common triggers for customs audits include: values significantly below similar goods, frequent changes in declared value, and incomplete documentation. Maintain consistent, well-documented valuation practices.
