Custom Precision Machining in China: tolerances, lead times, and costs

Chinese manufacturers often excel at producing what you ask for — but they won't tell you if what you asked for has a design flaw. That's not malice; it's a cultural difference in how responsibility is defined. The solution is to build review checkpoints into your process: design review, prototype approval, pre-production sample sign-off, and in-line inspection. Each checkpoint catches issues at the cheapest point to fix them.

Chinese factories have different levels of export maturity. Tier 1: factories that export directly, have bilingual staff, and understand international standards. Tier 2: factories that export through trading companies. Tier 3: domestic-only factories with no export experience. Tier 1 is ideal but expensive. Tier 2 offers the best value for most products. Tier 3 requires heavy hands-on involvement. Match your factory tier to your experience level.
